Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
Each tax season, Arizona families miss out on millions of dollars in tax refunds because they are unaware of programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable federal income tax credit eligible to low-income working individuals and families. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is designed to change this by providing families with the knowledge and guidance to lessen their financial burden. We rely on the following key sponsors whose funds help to make these efforts possible: Bank of America, Walmart and Wells Fargo.
About VITA
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax preparation services to individuals and families with low or limited income, disabilities, senior citizens and limited English speaking abilities. Volunteers prepare basic tax returns which will be filed electronically to expedite the refunds. All services are provided free of charge.
During the 2011-12 tax season 680 households who had their taxes prepared at one of the eight Valley of the Sun United Way VITA sites located in the West Valley received more than $1 million in tax refunds. There are many VITA sites across the Valley.
How to become a VITA volunteer
Our corp of trained IRS-certified volunteers are dedicated to helping return millions of dollars to West Valley families each year.
About EITC
Valley of the Sun United Way has partnered with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), faith-based, and community organizations to establish and to support EITC and VITA Sites in the West Valley. Our goal is to increase public awareness of the EITC and other available credits, provide free tax preparation services, and promote asset-building opportunities through financial literacy training. The EITC initiative is driven by VITA volunteers who donate their time to be tax preparers, interpreters, greeters and site coordinators.
Brought to you by the Maricopa County VITA Network - a partnership between Valley of the Sun United Way, AARP Tax Aide, Catholic Charities, City of Phoenix, City of Chandler, Mesa United Way, and Tempe Community Council.
