YOUR SUPPORT HELPS FUND ENDING HUNGER IN THE CLASSROOM FOR CHILDREN IN NEED.

United, we fight to end hunger in the classroom by providing breakfast to 130 schools serving more than 75,000 local children throughout Maricopa County. These schools have high rates of poverty and hunger. Many of their students are at risk of not having a steady, healthy, nutritious breakfast each morning.

We Are UNITED, presented by Women United, is our signature event to fund ending children’s hunger initiatives, such as WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks and Breakfast in the Classroom, that ensure every child is well nourished and ready to learn. See highlights and photos from last year's event.

This year, we are thrilled to present key note speaker Vanessa Williams, one of the most respected and multi-faceted performers in entertainment today. She has conquered the musical charts, Broadway, music videos, television and motion pictures. She has sold millions of albums worldwide and has achieved critical acclaim as an actress on stage, in film and on television.

VANESSA WILLIAMS

Vanessa Williams is one of the most respected and multi-faceted performers in the entertainment industry today. Vanessa was consumed by the arts at a young age, as her parents were both music teachers who encouraged her to pursue her love of performing. While attending Syracuse University, Williams participated in the Miss Greater Syracuse Pageant. Three months later, she was named Miss America 1984, becoming the first African American to win the title. She credits an ensuing controversy with further empowering her commitment to a career in entertainment.

Having sold millions of records worldwide, Vanessa has also scored numerous #1 and Top 10 hits on various Billboard Album and Singles charts: Pop, Dance, R&B, Adult Contemporary, Holiday, Latin, Gospel and Jazz.

Her critically acclaimed work in film, television, recordings and the Broadway stage has been recognized by every major industry award affiliate including 4 Emmy nominations, 11 Grammy nominations, a Tony nomination, 3 SAG award nominations, 7 NAACP Image Awards, 3 Satellite Awards and The Lena Horne Career Achievement Award. Her platinum single "Colors of the Wind," from the Disney film Pocahontas, won the Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

A strong advocate for equal rights, especially concerning the gay community and minorities, Vanessa was honored with the Human Rights Campaign “Ally for Equality” Award for her humanitarian contributions. She also achieved a career pinnacle with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.

Vanessa’s autobiography, “You Have No Idea,” co-written with her mother Helen Williams, was a New York Times Best Seller in 2012. Her recent Broadway credits include co-starring with Cicely Tyson in The Trip to Bountiful, (which was the #1 play of the 2013 season), After Midnight (2014), and a special limited engagement in Hey, Look Me Over at New York City Center in 2018. She also appears regularly on Evine promoting her fashion line, V. By Vanessa Williams.

Vanessa’s charitable endeavors are many and varied, embracing and supporting such organizations as Concerts for America, Special Olympics and several others. She is a devoted mother of four who balances family life with the demands of her entertainment career. She is an example of strength, determination, grace, and dignity to women who face adversity while pursuing dreams and she continues to inspire audiences to recognize when “opportunity unexpectedly knocks at your door."
