PHOENIX (Jan. 12, 2018) – For many people, Martin Luther King day is regarded as a Day of Service in honor of his legacy.

And this year, Valley of the Sun United Way will take the spirit of service one step further by providing opportunities to hundreds of community volunteers to make a difference in the Valley.

Volunteers will engage in community garden preparation, assemble backpacks full of food for children in need and create school readiness for children entering kindergarten and more. The goal — to make an impact on people throughout the community and help them fight poverty while honoring Dr. King’s legacy.

“We are looking forward to hosting an impactful weekend of service that will help implement positive changes in communities across the Valley,” said Francisco Avalos, director of engagement at Valley of the Sun United Way. “From a garden installation in Guadalupe to Weekend Hunger Backpack assembly in Phoenix, there are plenty of ways for community members to take advantage of a day off and the spirit of giving to make a positive impact.”
