Majority of Community College Students Nationwide Struggle to Make Ends Meet While Working to Earn a Degree; Event Will Connect Them With Critical Resources
PHOENIX, Arizona (October 31, 2017) – They’re the future of our community. But the majority of them struggle to make ends meet.
According to a national study, 60 percent of community college students struggle with hunger and 50 percent struggle with housing security while working to attain their degrees. This means they have to fight to not only stay in school, but to make sure they have food and shelter as well.
On Thursday, November 2, students from South Mountain Community College will get some help in the battle against poverty, thanks to a partnership between the Maricopa Community College District and Valley of the Sun United Way.
The United Way will hold a “Project Connect” event from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for students and families. Project Connect offers instant access to the resources people in our community need to start the journey back to health, financial stability and housing. This includes access to goods — like food and clothing — and services such as counseling and job placement.
About 500 students and community members are expected to attend this event and take a step in the fight against poverty and toward a brighter future for themselves and their families.
