This weekend, we lost one of our most beloved figures and an individual whose impact on Arizona is perhaps unmatched. The Valley of the Sun United Way team would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Senator John McCain.
Senator McCain and his wife Cindy were strong supporters of Valley of the Sun United Way, including membership in our Tocqueville Society. But beyond that, both Senator and Mrs. McCain have been strong allies in the battle against poverty in the Valley. Senator McCain led a life of example that showed the impact that hard work, determination and resilience can have in making our communities better places to live.
When he accepted his party’s nomination for President in 2008, he said something in his speech that reflects the United Way’s philosophy toward serving others. “Feed a hungry child. Teach an illiterate adult to read. Comfort the afflicted. Defend the rights of the oppressed. Our country will be the better, and you will be the happier. Because nothing brings greater happiness in life than to serve a cause greater than yourself.”
John McCain helped shape and define Arizona during his time in public service, and all Arizonans owe him a debt of gratitude for his contributions to our state. He was truly an example of the importance of giving back to our communities and our country. Our thoughts are with the McCain family during this difficult time.
