Stepping Stone Place is a permanent housing structure that provides permanent housing and on-site services, such as financial and addiction recovery services, to homeless individuals.
The 82-unit structure at 1311 N. 14th St., south of McDowell Road, is a permanent supportive-housing complex, a housing model that provides on-site benefits, employment and transportation assistance, according to Native American Connections CEO Diana Yazzie-Divine.
Permanent housing is more cost-effective than temporary and emergency housing structures, she added.
Stepping Stone is part of the Valley of the Sun United Way’s goal to reduce homelessness in Maricopa County by 75 percent by 2020.
The campaign will develop 1,000 permanent supportive-housing units by next year.
“We’re at 100 percent occupancy,” Yazzie-Divine said. “Once they’re occupied you don’t really want to see people leave unless services are no longer necessary or needed.”
The complex features 54 single-occupancy studios and 28 one-bedroom apartments.
