Backpack full of dreams.
It’s a scene that plays out in too many Maricopa County homes: A hungry child tries to focus on reading or school work on an empty stomach. Hunger has long-term consequences on children’s health, education and futures. For many children who live in the 82,000 Valley households that suffer chronic hunger, weekends are a dreaded time away from their only reliable source of food: school breakfast and lunch programs.
Valley of the Sun United Way’s WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks program provides meals to help those Valley children get through the weekends, and come to school Monday ready to learn. Your support helps us provide the meals that allow growing children to focus on their education, and succeed.
United Way partners with volunteers, schools and business supporters to provide children with food packaged to carry home and prepare easily.
You can help End Hunger in Maricopa County by:
- GIVE: Your gift directly to United Way connects children experiencing chronic hunger with meals during weekends and holiday breaks.
- VOLUNTEER: Transport WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks (opportunities available this Fall), or volunteer from home.
- ADVOCATE: Join our End Hunger Team. We’ll keep you informed and give you opportunities to take action to End Hunger.
