Finding Her Wings: How Elizabeth Is Building a Future in Aviation

For many young women in Arizona, the path to a stable, well-paying career is often filled with barriers. Limited access to professional networks, mentors, work-based learning opportunities and financial resources can make it difficult to turn career aspirations into reality. Across Maricopa County, these challenges contribute to persistent opportunity gaps and make it harder for young women to achieve long-term economic stability.

Elizabeth knew she had the ambition to build a successful future, but navigating the next steps on her own felt overwhelming. Through Valley of the Sun United Way’s Pathways to Economic Opportunity program, she found the support, guidance and resources needed to move forward with confidence.

Designed to help young women access career pathways, the program provides mentorship, job skills training, work-based learning opportunities, financial literacy workshops and school supplies that remove barriers to success. Participants are also matched with professional women mentors who help them build confidence, expand their networks and explore career possibilities.

“The best part about the program was the amount of support I was given by everyone at Valley of the Sun United Way,” Elizabeth said. “Not only did they encourage me to be my authentic self, but they also invested in my future. Having a mentor who believed in me, challenged me and helped me grow professionally gave me the confidence to pursue my goals as I finished high school.”

Today, Elizabeth is preparing for an exciting new chapter. This fall, she will attend the Universal Technical Institute to pursue a career in aviation—a field she is passionate about and eager to explore.

For Elizabeth, Pathways to Economic Opportunity provided a network of people committed to her success. Her story demonstrates what is possible when young women are given access to the opportunities they need to thrive.
