Choosing to donate to charity is a big decision. Just like any big decision, doing your research becomes very important before you select a charity to give to. If you are interested in donating time, money, or resources, these three things will help get you aligned with the right cause for you.
1. Does the Mission Match My Passion?
You will want to find a charity that offers help in a way that matters to you. Giving just for the sake of giving isn’t as fulfilling as giving to a cause special to you. Take some time to think about issues that really resonate with you. Some examples include:
Find a cause you want to be a part of and your donation will mean so much more.
2. Is the Organization Non-Profit?
To know if a charity is a non-profit, find out if they are a 501(c)(3). This means they have approval from the Internal Revenue Service to function as a tax-exempt organization. Why is that important? When you donate to a 501(c)(3) non-profit, your donation is tax deductible and you can check their rating on Charity Navigator.
3. How Are Their Actions Making an Impact?
Once you know what the charity’s mission is, find out what they are doing to support their cause. See how they are making an impact on their cause and how they are using their resources to transform their communities.
