5 Ways You Can Directly Impact Our Community This Month

April is National Volunteer Month! Are you looking for ways you can become a volunteer and make a difference in your community? With such a great number of options available, there’s sure to be something that fits what you’re interested in. Here are some things going on with Valley of the Sun United Way that you can be a part of this month.

1. Project Connect

Thursday, April 6

Take a hands-on approach to building a stronger community by volunteering at Project Connect on Thursday, April 6 at the Mesa LDS InterStake Center. During this event, people throughout the Valley can come for access to resources such as housing, a meal, clothing, job opportunities, haircuts and more.

2. CommUNITY Night

Thursday, April 13

Bring your family to Valley of the Sun United Way for a first-hand experience learning about family philanthropy. Activities include an encouragement card station, where you can create notes to go to children receiving WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks, and a Making Choices simulation where you will gain insight on the struggles some Valley families go through each month. Suggested participation age is 8 years and older.

3. Helping the Working Poor Tax Credit

Now – April 18

You can decide where your dollars go and receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit when you donate to the Helping the Working Poor fund. This fund goes toward helping hardworking families in Maricopa County get on their feet. Single filers can give up to $400 and couples can give up to $800.

4. Women’s Leadership Council Luncheon with Guest Speaker, Geena Davis

Friday, April 28

Join the Women’s Leadership Council and actor Geena Davis in the fight to end hunger in classrooms across the valley by attending their luncheon on Friday, April 28. The luncheon will benefit the Breakfast in the Classroom program to provide meals for local schools.

5. At Home Activities


Get your friends and family involved with fun at home activities. Spend time together building up our community right in your very own home. From giving a child a smile with encouragement cards to giving a family a meal with a recipe box, there’s something for everyone.
