HANNAH SCHLAGECK is a senior Arizona State University studying Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences on Nonprofit Leadership & Management and Public Policy, with a minor in Communication. She has interned with Valley of the Sun United way for her final semester prior to graduation, and has been the face behind some of the blogs posted since January of this year.
It is extremely difficult to put into words how much my time here at Valley of the Sun United Way has impacted my life. I knew I wanted to intern somewhere doing something to help any community that is struggling, not just making coffee runs and filing paperwork in an office. I was eager to work with this organization the minute I found the Marketing Intern position posted online because I had heard about their amazing work through my grandmother. Fast forward to now - I can say my time working with this organization was nothing like I had expected.
During my time as a Marketing Intern, my work spread into a few other departments of the organization to learn more about volunteer management, building and maintaining relationships with our corporate partners and donors. My proudest achievement was helping our ASU Student United Way members with improving their sustainability and efficiency of their student-ran organization by being an extra helping hand. It was so valuable to be a marketing liaison between VSUW and my University. With all the content I captured or produced I was given the utmost greatest support and professional feedback which has helped me become more confident in the work I want to do in my future.
Now that my last semester is coming to an end and graduation is nearing, I am reflecting on my time here with VSUW. I have had the best people to work with in the marketing department. Not only were they amazing at the work they do to market the complex work of the organization in an amazing light, but they were amazing people themselves with such big hearts. I received constant support especially when I felt my most stressed from school. Their meetings that I was able to sit in on were very beneficial for someone who is interested in getting into the nonprofit sector or organizational leadership. I was able to witness how the gears grind behind the scenes, how to maneuver through obstacles, and how to handle last-minute projects to fit community needs. This position has given me an insight into how important the marketing department is for such a large and dependable organization. It was way more than just taking pictures, getting quotes and content for composing blog and social posts. It was a positive growing and learning experience that truly opened my eyes about the hardest workers that keep this ship sailing and I genuinely enjoyed every minute of being out in the field.
I would like to thank everyone on the Marketing team - especially my manager, Meryl Hall - who helped me tremendously throughout the last few months. I am very grateful for this experience, and this will not be the end of my relationship with VSUW.
If you are a student interested in an amazing internship opportunity filled with creative freedom, a family-like atmosphere, and a passionate and uplifting team, the Marketing Intern position for the Summer 2019 is posted. If you are an ASU student that has 15-20 hours a week available to grow personally and professionally, I highly encourage you to apply. Help break the cycle of poverty with this rewarding experience.
