Over the last year, hundreds of volunteers and dozens of partners in the community teamed up with the Guadalupe Community Taskforce and Valley of the Sun United way to provide a healthy, green space to increase food access for Guadalupe families.
Working together with the community members, we were able to create more than 3,000 square feet of planting space to be tended to by master gardener and local resident Yolanda Florez. Her hard work throughout the preparation of the garden opening has been so instrumental that there was a bench at the garden named in her honor at the grand opening on Saturday, February 10.
In addition to the bench and numerous plants placed in garden beds at the opening last Saturday, a traditional Yaqui Ramada and a chicken coop were also installed. Many great community leaders such as Yaqui Town Elders, Tribal and Town Council, Town Mayor, Vice Chairman of the Yaqui Tribe and Congressman Gallego attended the opening to show their support for this community effort.
United Way is proud to have been a part of this project from preparation to opening and looks forward to a continued partnership with the community. This was just the beginning of what promises to be a great planting season for garden beds we have installed throughout the community.
