Our veterans have taken care of us through their service in the military. Unfortunately, some are now experiencing homelessness. After all they have done for our country, it’s our turn to take care of them. Arizona Housing Coalition partners with Valley of the Sun United Way each year to put on Maricopa County StandDown, a two-day event where veterans experiencing homelessness have access to resources that can help them get back on their feet.
StandDown is similar to Project Connect events, but offers services specific to veterans such as VA benefit assistance and resources that specialize in veteran assistance. United Way recruits volunteers for StandDown in place of Project Connect toward the beginning of each year to provide veterans with resources that best fit their needs.
This year’s StandDown is taking place Thursday, January 25 and Friday, January 26 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum on the Arizona State Fairgrounds. Volunteer shifts are still open on both days. Volunteers will receive information on how to be a guest guide and will be a friendly face and helping hand for a veteran, helping them find what services will be most useful for their situation.
This is an opportunity to be hands on in the fight to break the cycle of poverty for our veterans in Maricopa County. Sign up to help veterans today.
