Did you know only 46% of 3rd grade students passed the state reading exam in the 2017 school year? Children who aren’t reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade are held back. Teachers don’t always have the time to do extra one-on-one reading sessions and working professionals don’t always have time to volunteer.
When a student’s classroom incorporates Vello, Valley of the Sun United Way’s virtual tutoring program, it solves for all these potential problems. Students are paired up with passionate professionals through a safe and secure digital setting, accessible to volunteers wherever they are. This makes it possible for anyone to help students practice through one quick 30-minute guided reading session a week, the most proven method to advance reading skills, without having to leave home or work!
With the help of volunteer tutors, schools, and community partners we are fighting for kids. No other organization unites as many people in as many ways to break the cycle of poverty.
