On October 25, the ballroom of Arizona Country Club steadily filled with women dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty. Among them were four especially inspiring women – Mayor Jenn Daniels of Gilbert, Mayor Ginny Dickey of Fountain Hills, Mayor Valerie Molina of Guadalupe, and Mayor Anna Tovar of Tolleson.

The attendees got to hear a special inside look at the Mayors’ journey into office, someone who was inspirational in their lives, what they believe we can do for kids, and much more. These women shared such touching stories of their families and their belief in the kids in Maricopa County that were so powerful.

After the panel, Dr. Vicki Douvikas Curriculum Instructional and Assessment Specialist of the Murphy School District showed the amazing impact this group had directly on her school. Holding up the tattered remains of a book that had been torn apart and put back together multiple times, she shared about the library crisis they had stating, “This is what a book looked like. I’ve been trying to glue this book back together for these students to read, and this is what they were checking out of the library.” Then, she held up a brand new, nicely cared for book made possible by the donations of Women United.

Women United is also responsible for investing over $1 million in Maricopa County. This amazing group has made it possible for Valley of the Sun United Way to serve over 1 million meals through the WeekEnd Hunger Backpack program.
