A Think Tank session was held at United Way on July 26th by Sun Devils UNITE and Student United Way. Both groups are part of a student led partnership with Valley of the Sun United Way on all four campuses of Arizona State University. This is supported by a student committee and a staff advisory committee to support student efforts. These members represent all campuses and various student organizations and staff departments.
The group met to do a SWOT analysis on student involvement to get feedback on how to best engage more students on campus. Student United Way President, Maram Sweis, is involved in ROTC and the National Guard and stated that she has already been involved in the community through those clubs but by joining Student United Way, she was able to solidify her ability to give back while being able to help bring others into the club to advocate for the community as well.
In another display of student unity, students joined together August 13th in Sparky’s Day of Service. A total of 1,096 freshman put together 3,120 WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks with nearly 300 encouragement cards to go inside and more than 250 Book in a Bag projects. Some students decided to take their interest to a new level and join their peers in Student United Way, growing the group by 65 new members!
