Strong communities need strong leaders, and through Valley of the Sun United Way’s partnership with Bank of America, five student leaders from Arizona State University and Brigham Young University gained hands-on experience that prepared them to make a lasting impact both professionally and in the community.
Throughout the internship, students stepped into meaningful work that strengthened their leadership, communication and professional skills. They contributed to real projects across Valley of the Sun United Way, gaining experience in marketing and communications, donor engagement, business development, volunteer management and corporate partnership strategy.
One of their signature projects included developing a comprehensive public policy strategy, where they researched community issues, analyzed policy priorities and presented recommendations that support Valley of the Sun United Way’s mission to improve lives across Maricopa County.
The students also played an active role in community engagement, helping manage volunteer experiences at Valley of the Sun United Way’s Literacy Hub and supporting literacy initiatives that connect children and families with educational resources. Beyond the office, they visited and networked with nonprofit partners including St. Mary’s Food Bank, UMOM New Day Centers, Boys & Girls Clubs and Dress for Success Arizona, gaining firsthand insight into how collaborative partnerships address complex community challenges.
These experiences provided students with a deeper understanding of how nonprofits, corporations and community organizations work together to create lasting change.
