In the Murphy Elementary School District, there are three elementary schools with approximately 1,550 students. It is the lowest-income non-reservation district in Arizona and faces unique challenges. Children who live in poverty are twice as likely to repeat a grade in school and twice as likely to drop out before completing high school. By surrounding this district and the families with support and resources, we are providing opportunities for success.
With our partners and the community, we were able to uplift students and their families. We provided enough books to re-open the libraries and new computers for their classrooms to help students have access to tools to improve their education, and healthy foods so they can focus on learning instead of a growling tummy. For parents to get materials to work with their kids at home, we held a resource fair and gave School Readiness Kits for early childhood development. Students now have new opportunities and are on equal footing with other Valley schools.
We Fight for Kids in Many Ways
Some other examples of how we fight for kids include:
- Ensuring they are ready for kindergarten through access to quality childcare and School Readiness Kits
- Growing their skills so they are reading proficiently by 4th grade with Vello and Read On
- Help kids receive mentoring and education support at quality after-school and summer programs
- Ending hunger at home and in the classroom with emergency meals, Breakfast in the Classroom, and WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks.
None of this could happen without our partners, volunteers, and donors.
