In today’s interconnected world, digital literacy is as vital as financial literacy. Just as understanding budgets, credit, and investments empowers individuals to make informed financial decisions, digital literacy equips people to navigate the online world safely and effectively. From applying for jobs and accessing healthcare, to managing bank accounts and supporting children’s education, digital skills are essential for everyday life.
A key part of closing this gap comes from committed partners who are actively working to expand access and education. Cox Communications has been a champion in bridging the digital divide through initiatives like Connect2Compete and their Digital Academy, which help families gain both affordable connectivity and essential digital skills. Their presence is seen in our community, Cox provides signage, resources, and educational tools at all of our Literacy Hubs, supporting hands-on learning for families. This work has been especially impactful at our Digital Literacy Nights, where many families engage with Cox’s materials while receiving iPads graciously given through our partners at the Institute for Digital Inclusion Acceleration.
Equal digital access must be seen as a basic right, not just a luxury. Just as we at Valley of the Sun United Way push for widespread financial literacy, as a community we must demand comprehensive digital inclusion policies that prioritize access, affordability, and education. Only then can we build communities where all families, regardless of zip code or income, can thrive in the digital age.
