In schools throughout Maricopa County, and throughout the country, students and teachers are preparing for a big time of year. Read Across America Day is practically here! Every year, schools celebrate children’s author Dr. Seuss’s birthday by reading. Schools and volunteers partner with Valley of the Sun United Way to make it a week-long celebration in the Valley!
With hats atop their head and stories in their hearts, volunteers meet up with local classrooms to share the love of literacy with a great book to read with students.
Having volunteers coming to read to classrooms makes the day a fun event for children that can help them get excited about reading. Expect More Arizona shows only 46% of students in Maricopa County ranked proficient or highly proficient on the state reading exam in the 2016-17 school year. Students that aren’t reading at grade level by 3rd grade are held back. By reading together and creating a love for stories, we help kids enjoy reading and improve their skills, which is key to a good education. During test time having the right diet, exercise, and sleep patterns can help improve scores too!
