Mighty Families: How Tocqueville Leadership Is Keeping Families Housed and Children Learning

Author: Laura Kaiser, Chief Corporate and Donor Relations Officer

Across Maricopa County, many families with school-aged children are living one crisis away from homelessness. Rising rents, limited affordable housing, and reductions in public benefits have created significant pressure on households that are already struggling. When a family loses stable housing, children lose far more than a place to sleep. They lose consistency, community, and often their connection to school.

Because of Tocqueville Society donors, Valley of the Sun United Way is changing this reality through the Mighty Families program. This initiative provides early identification and rapid support for families who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness. Families are identified through trusted Title I school partners who recognize the first signs of housing instability. Once connected, families receive a comprehensive set of services that include rental and utility assistance, case management, workforce development, financial capability coaching, and navigation to public benefits.

United Way plays a unique role in this work. No single organization can meet all of these needs on its own. United Way coordinates a network of partners that includes Chicanos Por La Causa, St. Mary’s Food Bank, UMOM, and local school districts. This coordinated model ensures that families receive timely, culturally responsive support that keeps them safely housed and children connected to their school communities.

The results are significant. Eighty-five percent of families maintain or secure stable housing. Ninety percent of children remain in their school of origin. Half of all participating households increase income stability. Each year, approximately 180 families, representing more than 500 individuals, experience greater stability and a stronger path forward because of this program.

Your Tocqueville investment makes this possible. You are helping families avoid homelessness, strengthening educational continuity, and building long-term economic mobility across our community. This is the power of collective leadership, and it reflects the difference you make every day.
