Maricopa County experiences some of the hottest summers in the country. In 2020, the Valley broke records with 145 days of 100-degree temperatures. Extreme heat can be dangerous – even fatal, especially for our vulnerable neighbors experiencing homelessness during the blistering summer days.
Intending to provide resources and essential heat relief, Valley of the Sun United Way and Women United launched the Maricopa County Bottled Water Drive in 2020. During the inaugural drive, and in only two weeks, our community helped us collect over 50,000 bottles of water. After witnessing the power of our community and the life-saving resources in action, we brought the Maricopa County Bottled Water Drive back this year. This time, we set a mighty goal of collecting 200,000 bottles of water.
Throughout August, our community rallied behind our efforts and contributed to the bottled water drive in many ways. Whether it was through online monetary donations, drop-offs at partner locations or donations to internal water drives hosted by corporate partners and their teams, the success of the water drive is a testimony of the generosity, kindness and enthusiasm of our community. It is also a testament to our community’s understanding of the immense need that continues to exist.
Together, we collected 455,148 bottles of water.
Since August, your donations - nearly half a million bottles of water - have been distributed to nearly 20 nonprofit partners who are creating Mighty Change by providing hope and hydration to our community’s most vulnerable neighbors. These include:
On behalf of Valley of the Sun United Way, members of Women United, our nonprofit partners and the thousands of individuals they serve, we thank you.
We’d also like to shine a light on some corporate partners who raised their hand and joined us in this community-wide effort. We could not have done it without your support.
