Each summer, students can lose knowledge equal to 2 months of learning. The brain is a muscle that needs exercise just like the rest of your body. When kids go through a whole summer without “flexing” their brain and practicing lessons and skills, they could begin to fall behind in their education. Students who aren’t reading at grade level by 3rd grade are 13 times more likely to drop out of high school.
We are partnered with out-of-school summer centers to add tools to retain and improve literacy skills for kindergarten through 3rd graders to their regular summer group activities. In the summer of 2017, we were able to impact more than 1,000 students, with 96% showing improvement in literacy skills. Evaluations from 2016 showed participating students were actually gaining 3 months of knowledge in this area instead of losing 2 months.
Together, we are helping children learn how to keep their body AND mind exercised, breaking the cycle of poverty through quality education for all kids in our community. We can’t do it alone. To live better, we must live united.
