As ASU football prepared to take on the Utah Utes Saturday, fellow Sun Devils faced off against hunger.
Student United Way and Sun Devils Unite—student organizations at ASU and partners with Valley of the Sun United Way—raised more than $875 through two events during Homecoming weekend. Sun Devils Unite sponsored a silent auction and Student United Way led its second “Make Hunger Disappear,” a fundraising event. It begins with the word “HUNGER” spelled out in white plates against a 30-foot wall. With each $5 donation to United Way, students remove a plate from the wall with the goal to make “HUNGER” disappear.
“Homecoming gives student volunteers the opportunity to challenge their peers to get involved,” said Dr. Christine Wilkinson, ASU’s Senior Vice President and Secretary.
More than a dozen ASU student organizations, including Student United Way collaborate through Sun Devils Unite.
“It's great see up close the impact on our local community,” Kelsey Nelson, Student UW president.
Wilkinson’s connection to United Way extends beyond ASU, to her childhood. “My mother volunteered with United Way, so I had good role model,” she said.
In the thrilling gridiron matchup, the Sun Devils brought down the Utes 19-16, while ASU students sacked hunger in the Valley.
