Get to know Leslie Lewis, a Women United Steering Committee member who started her journey with United Way as a member of Generation United. Leslie is a champion for all things Women United and we are grateful for her community leadership!
Q: In today’s busy world, tell us one thing you do on a regular basis to ensure ‘self-care’.
A: I have planned “me time”. I don’t wake up and check my emails. I reserve time in the morning just for me to mentally prepare for my day. I have also recently gotten back into cooking and spend my evenings cooking a new recipe that I probably found earlier in the day. Cooking is a great stress reliever and distracts you from the noise.
Q: Tell us about a leadership trait that you possess and why you think it’s important.
A: Commitment and passion. I don’t take on anything that I’m not fully committed to. I lead with a full heart as my time and yours are so precious. If we’re working on something together, you’re getting all of me.
Q: Why does philanthropy matter?
A: Philanthropy provides opportunities. I believe everyone is born with talent, but not everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Philanthropy allows the world to invest in those who wouldn’t have a chance at success otherwise.
Q: Tell us something that most people wouldn’t know about you.
A: I grew up with a single mom whom worked two jobs and was a recipient of the free and reduced lunch program all through elementary school. There are times I can remember receiving food bank boxes that friends dropped off to us.
Q: Share your favorite inspirational quote.
A: “she believed she could, so she did” R.S Grey... bet you thought that was Kate Spade
Q: What would you like women considering joining Valley of the Sun United Way’s Women United movement to know?
A: There’s no education level, job title or a certain amount of $ in your bank account required. This is truly a group of like-minded women coming together with the same interest to support each other, and the community. I’ve grown so much personally and professionally just by being around this amazing group. There’s no judgement or expectations other than showing up and doing work.
When Women Unite, our community is stronger. Join the movement to inspire and connect with philanthropic women to activate change in our community.
