Disaster Preparedness
United We Prepare

Building stronger, more resilient communities, together.

When disaster strikes, preparedness saves lives.

In Arizona, communities face growing risks from extreme heat, wildfires, flooding, and power outages. Valley of the Sun United Way is helping our community stay ready, respond effectively, and recover stronger—because resilience starts long before a crisis.

Why Preparedness Matters

Each year, families face longer heat waves, more intense storms, and shifting public health risks. That’s why Valley of the Sun United Way invests in community-wide disaster readiness, supporting local systems that protect health, housing, and stability before, during, and after emergencies.

Our Approach

Our approach is building equitable resilience by supporting communities to prepare, respond, and recover from disasters through resources, partnerships, and guidance.

Disasters in Arizona

Our state faces a range of hazards, each requiring different strategies to stay safe and resilient.

Extreme Heat

Arizona’s most frequent and deadly natural disaster. When temperatures soar, access to shade, cooling centers, and hydration can save lives. Through community outreach, emergency supplies, and local partnerships, we help ensure residents can stay safe and cool.

Wildfires and Air Quality

Wildfire season brings threats not only from flames but also from smoke and poor air quality. We promote emergency alert sign-ups, defensible space practices, and health guidance to protect vulnerable populations.

Monsoon Flooding and Severe Storms

Sudden downpours and flash floods can cause dangerous road conditions and home damage. We share flood preparedness tips, connect residents with shelter resources, and support post-disaster recovery.

Power Outages and Utility Emergencies

Extreme heat, storms, or infrastructure stress can cause power outages, posing serious risks for those relying on air conditioning, refrigeration, or medical devices. We advocate for accessible backup solutions and emergency response planning.
