As I reflect on Valley of the Sun United Way’s 100-year anniversary, I can’t help but think about what first got me involved, and the journey that influenced my own career and shaped who I am today.
My first connection was through a workplace campaign in 2008. I had been at PetSmart for a little over a year and was inspired by the impact Phil Francis, the CEO at the time, was making in the community through his involvement with Valley of the Sun United Way (VSUW). I decided to donate a portion of my paycheck to their work.
In March of 2009, I attended my first volunteer event with VSUW; it was designed for early career professionals looking to make an impact beyond donation, and we were painting a local organization’s community gymnasium. I’ll never forget walking in by myself, uncertain of what I’d do and who I’d meet, quickly hitting it off with other volunteers as we refreshed a space that would be used by kids in the community.

I continued showing up to events and eventually joined the affinity group’s steering committee: First as a member, then as a sub-committee leader, the group’s co-chair and finally, as a member of VSUW’s Board of Directors.
Along the way, I learned so many foundational elements that helped shape my career. I became confident in building a strategy, leading teams, strengthening my executive presence, and making meaningful connections with non-profit organizations across the Valley. I would not be who I am today without VSUW believing in me and giving me the opportunities to grow.
And I’m not alone. For 100 years, countless others have benefited from the work of Valley of the Sun United Way and their community partners. If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, I can promise it’s worth it. Start where you are, show up once, and see the difference you can make.
