A Dream for the Community

01/17/2019, By Valley of the Sun United Way

On Saturday, January 19th, Operation Uplift will be at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center for their very first volunteer event of 2019. This event is focused on bringing the community together through the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr., a fighter of poverty himself, to honor his legacy through service. In the spirit of MLK Jr., feelings of inclusivity, encouragement, giving, caring, assisting, and uniting instead of dividing are important ways to spend this day on, not off, to connect with each other, Rise Up and get involved with our community.

Located in the Historic Warehouse District in Downtown Phoenix, the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center started as a segregated high school that first opened in the 1920’s. Today, the museum is a historic preservation site that is dedicated to the collection, documentation, preservation, study, and dissemination of the history and culture of Africans and Americans of African descent in Arizona, and has been doing so for the last 92 years.

This upcoming MLK weekend, Valley of the Sun United Way has a volunteer opportunity for people to work on painting three large rooms, landscape, lay out rock, and organize rooms throughout the center. United Way is partnering with the African American Christian Clergy Coalition (AACCC) to truly get the community to Rise Up and get involved in the care of this powerful and impactful site. It is going to be an amazing event with a lot of community involvement, and to make it even better, lunch will be provided.

Join us as we take on these projects at the George Washington Carver Museum & Cultural Center and create a special memory of your day ON.
