Continuing the Fight to End Hunger in Local Schools

03/15/2018, By Valley of the Sun United Way

Last month, the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) released the annual School Breakfast Scorecard showing results of schools offering breakfast programs to their students. The study found that nationally, almost 14.4 million children participated in the School Breakfast Program with about 12.2 million children receiving free or reduced-price meals coming from low-income households.

Without access to a healthy breakfast, students may experience a rough start to their day and feel less focused, affecting their education. In Maricopa County 1 in 4 children experiences hunger, unsure of where their next meal is coming from. That’s why Valley of the Sun United Way fights to end hunger and ensure kids succeed in school.

Women United
has taken a lead role in joining this fight by hosting the annual We Are UNITED Luncheon to support programs that end hunger in the classroom like WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks and Breakfast in the Classroom.

At this year’s luncheon, attendees will have an exclusive opportunity to see guest speaker Vanessa Williams! Last year, the luncheon raised $200,000 and put Breakfast in the Classroom into 67 schools. Check out the highlights and pictures here.

There are tables and sponsorship opportunities for this year still available, so you can join the fight too!
