We Are United Luncheon Unites Against Hunger

05/09/2019, By Valley of the Sun United Way

In a room full of daisies in the desert, some of the Valley’s most generous women and men stayed true to the name of We Are United by standing together to grow a solution to end childhood hunger. This annual luncheon, hosted by Women United, raises funds to support WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks and Breakfast in the Classroom. These programs help children in Maricopa County start their day off right with a healthy breakfast and keep the hunger away by providing food for the weekend.

Guests heard from Academia Del Pueblo Principal, Dr. Frank Lomeli, as he shared how his students described the feeling of hunger to him and the difference United Way has made in his classrooms and for his students. Auctiontainer Leticia Fry moved the room with her passionate retelling of her visit with Frank, seeing for herself what an impact these programs have made in his school. To end the event, Lisa Ling shared about her experiences across the world. Her stories were a beautiful reminder to think about what it’s like to live in someone else’s world, in someone else’s experiences.

Together, this room of Women United members and community leaders raised more than $481,000 through this luncheon to maintain and grow this work! Thank you so much to all who attended, volunteered, sponsored, and donated. We are moving the needle, together!

If you weren’t able to make the luncheon this year, please enjoy this photo album from the event and the highlight video above. We look forward to seeing you next year!
