Why this funding matters
In 2026, early childhood education remains one of the most powerful investments a community can make. Through a $50,000 grant from the PNC Foundation, Valley of the Sun United Way has been able to grow Literacy Hubs that support school readiness for children from birth through age five. This funding aligns directly with PNC’s Grow Up Great strategy, which focuses on equity, access, and ensuring all children have the resources they need to succeed before they ever step into a kindergarten classroom.
What it allowed us to do differently
PNC’s support of Literacy Hubs allowed children to receive direct learning experiences in their classrooms and community spaces, while educators gained tools and resources to strengthen instruction, as seen through our Backpack Builds and Teacher Kits, created through our volunteer activities with PNC employees. Just as importantly, the funding helped expand family engagement efforts, equipping parents and caregivers with strategies to support learning at home. “Early literacy doesn’t start and end in the classroom, it’s built through consistent, meaningful engagement with families,” said Dawn Gerundo, Community Director for Education at Valley of the Sun United Way.
Why partnerships like this matter
Partnerships like this one between PNC Foundation and Valley of the Sun United Way demonstrate how aligned values can create measurable impact. Over 700 families have been served across the three Hubs, with 93% of students improving their literacy skills and 99% of parents increasing reading interactions with their children.
By combining Valley of the Sun United Way’s expertise with PNC’s corporate leadership and employee volunteer projects, this collaboration revitalizes early education. It also lays the groundwork for continued innovation and shared learning. Together, we’re proving that when children are supported early, communities grow stronger for generations to come.
