What does it mean to be a slacktivist? The word is a combination of the words “slacker” and “activist” and, as defined by en.oxforddictionaries.com, slacktivism refers to actions performed via the Internet in support of a social cause but regarded as requiring little time or involvement, for example joining a campaign group on social media.
At Valley of the Sun United Way, we know the power social media can have on a cause, we know of many giving and caring millennials who come out to serve at various volunteer events, and we know ways you can help!
Put your passion into action by volunteering for a cause at United Way. Volunteering is very important to building a stronger community and there’s no slack in that!
Haven’t volunteered with us before? That’s okay! We’re tackling childhood hunger, improving literacy for kids, combating homelessness and more, we would love to have you join!
On the United Way volunteer page there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. The calendar will list dates and times of ongoing volunteer events so you can find a time that fits in with your schedule throughout the year. Here’s our volunteer guide for more information.
Making the decision to put your dollars to support a cause is a big choice. These dollars make it possible to put food on the table, offer shelter, increase financial literacy assistance, and provide other resources many people across the Valley need to get back on their feet.
To donate, you can take a look at our donation page or text the word “Donation” to 51555, and to get more information, explore our online donation information guide here.
Challenge your friends to join you in reaching a goal by creating a fundraiser on Facebook. On the left-hand side of your newsfeed, toward the bottom, there is a section called “CREATE” with a “Fundraiser” option.
Next it will ask, “Who are you raising money for,” with a “Nonprofit” option.
In the search bar, enter “Valley of the Sun United Way” and click to select.
From there you will be able to enter a title for your fundraiser, information about why you’d like them to join you, as well as a goal and end date.
With so many ways to get involved, it’s easy to move away from “slacktivist” and put the ACT in “ACTivist”!
