The summer slide is not as fun as it sounds, it refers to the loss of learning that children can experience in the summer months. Without keeping their brain active over the summer a student is likely to fall behind their peers in education. You can help your child keep their literacy skills up over the summer just by mixing a few minutes of reading into each day!
To help make reading fun for children, A Universe of Stories is a summer reading program that rewards readers with new books as they complete challenges and participate in daily activities at home. Families near the Tolleson Library, Sam Garcia Western Avenue Library, and Goodyear Library joined us at the kick-off of this program on Saturday, May 18 and residents of Avondale joined in at Madison Heights on June 5. Participants were able to get a library card, free registration into the program, and some free books thanks to Scholastic!
