It’s the end of December and the new year is close by. As we look back at the accomplishments we achieved thanks to our volunteers, partners and donors this year, we are so thankful for all of the people in Maricopa County committed to joining the fight to break the cycle of poverty.
Some of our highlights of the year include:
- More than 800 volunteers came together for our Day of Action to beautify 9 schools, install 20 community gardens, prepare 990 School Readiness Kits, create over 1,200 Encouragement Cards, and build more than 200 Book-in-a-Bags.
- On August 14th, Sparky’s Day of Service engaged more than 1,500 ASU student volunteers who put together over 2,600 WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks, 12,000 School Readiness kits, and hundreds of Book-in-a-Bags.
- Led by Women United, we welcomed Geena Davis at our 2nd Annual We Are United Luncheon on April 28th to raise nearly $200,000 for Breakfast in the Classroom, placing the program in 67 schools, serving 8,500,000 meals annually.
- This February, 1,200 volunteers came together at our annual StandDown event to help more than 2,000 homeless veterans get access to the resources they need to get back on their feet.
- Our online virtual tutoring program, Vello, launched nationally to seven cities.
- In partnership with the Promotores HOPE Network and Isaac Elementary School District and Foundation, 31 Maryvale Promotores opened up a community resource house to help neighbors discover food access and human service resources with our support.
- Generation United focused their volunteer power in Guadalupe assisting with community gardens and quality out of school time activities.
These achievements are just a few examples of how, together, we are fighting to break the cycle of poverty for every child, individual, and family in Maricopa County. We couldn’t do it alone. Thank you for a great 2017.
