American Express believes in creating equitable, resilient and sustainable communities globally. Since 1954, the American Express Foundation, has provided nearly a billion dollars to thousands of causes around the world, including Valley of the Sun United Way.

Like United Way, American Express is dedicated to empowering underrepresented communities and supporting their unmet needs. For example, in October of 2021 the corporation provided a $30,000 grant for the United Way’s Pantry Packs program. This critical program provides “shelf-stable pantry items” for children, and their families, who reside in high-need school districts throughout Maricopa County.

Through its philanthropic and community work, American Express serves and supports the organizations that are positively impacting some of society’s toughest challenges, including the health and economic concerns brought on by the ongoing pandemic. In May 2020, American Express stepped up during a time of need and donated $45,000 to the United for the Valley COVID-19 Fund. Along with other generous corporate donors, their gift helped to raise approximately $3M. This fund also provided more than half a million local individuals and families with services such as emergency food, rental assistance and tools for digital learning.

For more than a decade, American Express employees have shared their time and talent on the Campaign Cabinet, Generation United and the Women United Committees. Over the years, corporate team members participated in engagement events including: the World Record to End Hunger, Project Connect, Maricopa County StandDown, Day of Action, School Readiness Kits and WeekEnd Hunger Backpack assemblies. They have also volunteered to write thank you cards to teachers and frontline healthcare workers early on in the pandemic.
