November 2018 Operation Uplift Impact

In Roosevelt last Saturday, Operation Uplift continued as people gathered to rise up.

The nearly 140 volunteers, including 83 Arizona State University students, assisted with multiple tasks in the area in just one day. This group:

  • Assembled 1,560 WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks
  • Helped prepare a 19 acre urban farm for Fall Harvest, cleaning and clearing garden rows and pruning dozens of trees
  • Attended a Healthy Roots presentation put on by Unlimited Potential Promotoras

Healthy Roots is a presentation hosted by the Unlimited Potential Promotoras. It is an opportunity to showcase the history, medicinal use and how to prepare a particular plant from Spaces of Opportunity. On Saturday, Promotoras showcased, Radish. They shared how the root vegetable can be used as a pomade for rashes, made us a delicious salad and is of course a great topping for a bowl of Pozole. Unlimited Potential Promotoras host Healthy Roots classes once a month at Spaces of Opportunity in South Phoenix.

You Can Rise Up, Too

Operation Uplift kicked off in September and will have monthly events leading up to National Volunteer Week April 12-20, 2019, when dozens of volunteer events will be available throughout the week, ending with a big celebration on Saturday, April 20.

We hope you can join us at the next Operation Uplift event. Check out www.vsuw.org/uplift for more information.
