What is Women’s History Month?
Women’s History Month is a time to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women in our country and local community. The annual celebration started back in 1987 and takes place during the entire month of March. During this time, you and your family can explore the achievements of women that make the world a better, more equitable place.
Women’s History in Arizona
In 1912, Arizona became the tenth state to grant women the right to vote. This happened eight years before the ratification of the 19th
Amendment, allowing all U.S women to vote.
Our state is also the home to many female pioneers. In 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor became the first woman in the United States Supreme Court. O’Connor practiced law in Maryvale and served as assistant Attorney General in the 1960’s.

Women’s History Month 2022 Theme
The National Women’s History chooses a theme each year. The theme for 2022 is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” The theme is a tribute to the caregivers and frontline workers who have worked tirelessly during the ongoing pandemic.

Key Dates for Women’s History Month
- March 8th – International Women’s Day is celebrated annually. This year’s theme is Break the Bias. It shines a spotlight on gender bias and discrimination in and outside of the workplace.
- March 13th – The anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage Parade in Washington D.C. More than 8,000 women attended to push for the right to vote.
- March 22nd – The anniversary of the Senate passing of the Equal Rights Amendment. This happened in 1972. Arizona was one of 15 states that did not approve the amendment.
