Read to a Child

Join the Million Minutes Volunteer Reading Challenge.

Reading fluently by the end of third grade – it’s a pivotal achievement that maps out a child’s entire future. Each page a child is read, and new word they learn, brings them closer to a happy ending: Their success in school and life.

Many children don’t have access to books or someone to read to them. Valley of the Sun United Way’s Million Minutes Volunteer Reading Challenge will fill that void. Our Women’s Leadership Council is mobilizing volunteer readers to take action to reach our One Million Minute reading goal by May 2014.

Your help is more important than ever. During the 2013-14 school year, a new Arizona law “Move on When Reading” mandates that third graders be held back if not reading at grade level. The law could impact up to 5,000 students statewide.

You can re-write the story for these kids
