Get to know Pat Egan. Pat has been a Retire United member and Vello volunteer for the past 3 school years.
Q: When did you first become involved in United Way?
A: I began contributing to United Way through work beginning in the 1970’s. I joined Retire United 3 years ago when I was presented the opportunity to volunteer reading with children in the Vello program.
Q: What did you do professionally?
A: I worked in the life insurance industry with 3 companies for 35 years in various positions in Policy Service, Underwriting, Claims and ultimately in management and responsibility for systems projects.
Q: Tell us about your Vello experience.
A: The first time I read with a child online with Vello was the most rewarding feeling I’ve had since retiring. I was as excited after the first 30 minute session as the child was. During the first year I read with two children and the growth and development I heard in these children was incredible. I was able to meet both my students that year and they were both as I had envisioned. I was a bit apprehensive to read with first graders this year but it is unbelievable how well my students are reading and how much they enjoy the experience. Their teachers are excellent which is reflected in their students' desires and abilities.
Q: Why does volunteering matter to you?
A: I feel a need to pay things forward and working with young children is personally very rewarding for me. Learning, interacting with others, socializing and building self confidence helps them succeed, not only in school but in their personal lives.
Q: What do you do to ensure self-care?
A: I walk my dog every day, go to the gym and have annual check ups. I socialize with my friend network and travel with my husband. I love the outdoors, gardening and cooking.
Q: Tell us something that most people don’t know about you.
A: My parents were farmers and only educated through the sixth grade. There were 6 children in my entire class in my little country school and I only saw them during the school year. I loved school and worked hard to excel to make my parents proud by making good grades. I am the youngest of 5 children and the only one that got a college degree. However, my brothers and sisters were also successful in life because of the values and work ethic instilled by caring parents.
